If you own one of Samsung\u2019s flagship smartphones, it\u2019s very likely that you already tried virtual reality, using one of the manufacturer\u2019s headsets. After all, there are quite a few <\/span>Gear VR compatible phones<\/span><\/a> now, so it would actually be a shame if you didn\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n

Samsung is aware of this, so with one of the software updates they released this year, they introduced <\/span>a pack of Oculus apps<\/b>, including the <\/span>Gear VR service app<\/b>. It\u2019s not the first time when bloatware is added through an update, but we\u2019re already used to it. After all, it\u2019s Samsung we\u2019re talking about, a manufacturer already famous for pulling such moves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back to the update, it was supposed to <\/span>facilitate enjoying virtual reality<\/b> on users’ smartphones, but it had some <\/span>side effects<\/b>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Yo, Samsung, what’s going on with our phones?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Starting with September 29, when Oculus updated its apps, a lot of Samsung Galaxy owners started complaining about their phones\u2019 <\/span>battery life<\/b>, as well as <\/span>overheating<\/b>. And we all know what happened last time when a Samsung had overheating issues, right? <\/span>R.I.P. Galaxy Note 7<\/span><\/a>, you will be missed. I think. <\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly after, the forums and Q&A boards were busting with questions like \u201c<\/span>Gear VR Service is <\/b>draining my new S8<\/b>. What should I do?\u201d or \u201c<\/span>I have high battery drain even when the screen is off. What should I do?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

People even started <\/span>Reddit threads<\/span><\/a>, detailing the entire experiences, with one user claiming that his phone lost 70 percent battery in just three hours. The Oculus forum was also filled with similar issues, caused by the Gear VR Oculus app. <\/span><\/p>\n

In this case, what should you do, as a user dealing with the same problem? Don\u2019t worry, we have some solutions. <\/span><\/p>\n

How to uninstall Gear VR software<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are a few steps you should follow in order to <\/span>solve your phone\u2019s battery problems, caused by the Gear VR apps<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Disable it from the Settings menu<\/span><\/h3>\n

First thing first, a user with basic Android knowledge would try disabling the Gear VR service app from the menu. Go to Settings > Apps and select the Gear VR app, then check the disable option. If it doesn\u2019t work, you\u2019re not alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a lot of users reported, <\/span>the option to disable is greyed out<\/b>, so we should look for something else. <\/span><\/p>\n

As you probably know, getting rid of Samsung\u2019s bloatware is, hands down, a real nightmare, unless your phone is rooted and you install a custom ROM. But there are a few different approaches since this is a very technical option, which requires proper documentation and experience. Basically, <\/span>you can\u2019t disable the Gear VR service without root<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Disable it using a third-party app<\/span><\/h3>\n

If you don\u2019t want to root your phone, we have some good news: you can also try disabling the app, using…an app. A lot of Samsung users reported that <\/span>Package Disabler Pro<\/span><\/a> is a viable solution for disabling Gear VR Service<\/b>, Gear VR SetupWizardStub, and Gear VR Shell. After doing this, the setup app won\u2019t run anymore, so your battery problems will be over.<\/span><\/p>\n

Uninstall all Oculus Apps<\/span><\/h3>\n

First of all, you should try <\/span>uninstalling the Oculus app pack, one app at a time<\/b>. Start with Oculus home, then Oculus Room. After this, re-dock the phone. Your phone should start downloading the latest update, which will solve your battery issues. But this is not guaranteed to work.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other side, another variant (and better) would be to uninstall all Oculus apps and wait until there\u2019s something official from their side, alongside an update promising to fix this. Sure, you won\u2019t be able to use your Gear VR anymore, but it\u2019s better than having a constantly hot phone. <\/span><\/p>\n

Use OEM cables<\/span><\/h3>\n

Finally, after looking for several solutions, we found something on the Samsung Community, coming from one of the company\u2019s representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

They claim to have found out that <\/span>using low-quality third-party cables may cause the Gear VR service to become active<\/b>. In this case, he recommended to use just Samsung-approved accessories. We\u2019re not guaranteeing for this one either. <\/span><\/p>\n

Force stop the Gear VR Service App<\/span><\/h3>\n

The same representative also suggests going to the app manager, in the \u2018More options\u2019 submenu, so you can see all the system apps. Locate all Gear VR-related services and <\/span>force stop <\/b>them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently, this one doesn\u2019t work all the time, since the app can restart. Not to mention that it will start running again after rebooting the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Check the VR Developer Mode<\/span><\/h3>\n

Another user reported that he found this while trying to test something. The phone was stuck in this mode, causing the Gear VR service app to run in the background, thus draining the battery fast. <\/span><\/p>\n

The easiest solution would be to <\/span>activate VR developer mode<\/b>, by following <\/span>these steps.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Then, turn off the phone, followed by <\/span>deactivating all apps associated with Gear VR<\/b>. A solution worth checking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Limit background usage of data<\/span><\/h4>\n

Some users claim that <\/span>this solution actually works<\/b>, significantly improving battery life, not to mention that all heating problems are gone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Specifically, you should follow these steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Go to Settings > Connections, then turn on data saver. This can limit background usage of data for any app you want. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • After this, go to Settings > Apps and click on the three dotted button on top right, followed by selecting \u201cAllow app while data saver on\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Click on the three dots again and pick \u201cshow system apps\u201d, then turn off everything that is associated with Gear VR. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    These are just a couple solutions which you can use to fix <\/span>the battery drain issue that some are experiencing after an Oculus update. Until this very moment, there\u2019s no official guaranteed-to-work solution offered by Samsung, so, in the end, it depends just on you to fix your phone\u2019s issues. <\/span><\/p>\n
