After all, what did you expect from a device made alongside the folks over at Oculus, one of the biggest names in the game?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amount of apps available for it is already pretty big, but hey, there will always be <\/span><b>people wanting more from their headset and start developing their own apps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re fancying this idea as well, but don\u2019t know where and how to start, we have a tip for you: <\/span><b>Unity for Gear VR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The game development platform now comes with built-in support for the Samsung Gear VR and it\u2019s actually <\/span><b>the best way to start with making VR apps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After learning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/create-virtual-reality-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to create virtual reality images<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, let\u2019s see how you can do something even cooler&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should I start with?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samsung and Oculus really appreciate developers who like to get involved with their products, so they put together a pack with tools and detailed instructions, available at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.oculus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developer.oculus.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, <\/span><b>a lot of the stuff you can find over there is outdated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After all, we\u2019re talking about technology! However, we went through it and found that Oculus Mobile SDK is the main thing we need for VR development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s a serious problem with it\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oculus Mobile SDK includes all sorts of things, like packages, samples and all the resources compatible with Android Studio or Unity, so you can build VR apps. <\/span><b>Setting up is a real nightmare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so we looked for an alternative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Unity 5, but without setting up the mobile SDK, is <\/span><b>the fastest and easiest way<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it has support for the Gear VR built-in. Before getting to this, though, there are a few things you need to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to set up an Android environment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting up the Java SDK and Android SDK, as well as working USB drivers for your Samsung device on your PC are some of the first steps you need to make. <\/span><b>All the documentation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on this can be found in Unity\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.unity3d.com\/Manual\/android-sdksetup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official setup guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019re done with this step, we guess that you\u2019ll want to <\/span><b>test the apps directly on your Samsung smartphone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But I guess you don\u2019t want to insert the phone in the Gear VR each time you need to test the app, right? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this situation, you should know that you can build and run directly from Unity, as long as you enable development mode for Gear VR. You can do it by following these steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 1: Go to Settings, in the phone\u2019s menu<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Simply click on the Settings icon, after opening the app drawer.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 2: Go to Application Manager &gt; Gear VR Service<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Selec this option.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Select Storage &gt; Manage Storage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Look for the VR service version.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 4: Click on VR service version a couple of times, <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait until you get the \u201cYou are a developer\u201d message, then the Developer Mode toggle is displayed. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 5: Toggle Developer Mode. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, you\u2019re almost ready. Let\u2019s move on to the next step!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to set up Unity for Gear VR<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervous? No need. You\u2019ll learn <\/span><b>how to develop VR apps in no time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Just stick with me on this next important step. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since you\u2019re going to use Unity 5, you need need to complicate your life with any additional integration, so it can work with VR. Just stick to the Oculus Utilities, as the package comes with all the API, scripts, as well as the prefabs you need in order to work with Gear VR. You can download it from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer3.oculus.com\/downloads\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-gear-vr-development-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Unity Gear VR development\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-gear-vr-development-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-gear-vr-development-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-gear-vr-development-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-gear-vr-development-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-gear-vr-development.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re done with this, you need to follow these steps: <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 1: Open unity and create a new project<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 2: Go to File &gt; Build Settings and select Android. Then, switch the platform. <\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Go again to File &gt; Build Settings and open Player Settings.<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set Virtual Reality Supported in the Other Settings. This should show Oculus under SDKs. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set the Bundle Identifier and Minimum API Level. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 4: \u00a0Get a signature file (.osig)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is <\/span><b>a very important step<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since the .osig is required to run your Oculus app on the device. Still, you can get one by registering as a developer on Oculus\u2019 platform, then generate it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.oculus.com\/tools\/osig-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to <\/span><b>obtain your Device ID<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by running adb services, through a Command Prompt on Windows. Then, copy it into the form and download the .osig file. It should be placed inside your Unity project\u2019s directory, at YourProjectDirectory\/Assests\/Plugins\/Android\/assets. If you can\u2019t find it, create one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skipping this step will lead to getting the \u201cAPK is not Signed\u201d error while running your app. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 5: Open the package you just downloaded<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OculusUtilities.unitypackage will open in Unity, so go on and Select all items, then Import them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are all the Universal Scripts you need, Event Handlers, as well as everything else you need in order to create your first Gear VR app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019re done with importing, you will see the OVR and Plugins Folder in your project, containing all the utilities we will use shortly. Also, if you check the scenes folder, under OVR, you will see a couple of basic scenes, but great for starters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-vr-samples.jpg\" alt=\"Unity VR samples\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-vr-samples.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-vr-samples-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-vr-samples-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/unity-vr-samples-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.assetstore.unity3d.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unity\u2019s Asset store<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a lot of VR samples, but you can also find detailed projects, built for the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 6: Test the demo scene<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that your first demo is ready, you need to connect the device to the your PC. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open the Scene, then go to File &gt; Build Settings, then opt for Add Open Scenes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, you need to check the scenes you want in your app, the select Build &amp; Run. If everything went well, you should be asked to insert the phone into the Samsung Gear VR and see what you\u2019ve done.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to publish an updated build over WiFi<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to make your development workflow even easier, we have an additional step for our Unity Gear VR tutorial which you can consider. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presuming that you\u2019re <\/span><b>seriously thinking at continuing your newly found passion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you will eventually want to publish an updated build of your app. Instead of removing the phone from the headset and connect it to your PC via USB, you can push the updated game over WiFi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this, you need the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=za.co.henry.hsu.adbwirelessbyhenry&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADB wireless app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, available in the Play Store. Connect the phone to your PC, via USB, using this app, then follow the on-screen instructions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to run the following commands: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adb tcpip 5555<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adb connect [device IP]<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find the adb command in the \u201cplatform-tools\u201d directory of your Android SDK installation directory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have new build ready, you can keep the phone in the Gear VR.
