We already saw some amazing projects coming from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/augmented-reality-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">augmented reality companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and we bet that there are way more coming up!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you know what\u2019s the coolest part about it? You can also do it. Take advantage of it, that is!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If until now you\u2019ve tried making your own VR apps and you\u2019re up for a new challenge or simply want to learn something new, we have some good news. <\/span><b>Unity and augmented reality make a sensational duo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wanna know why it\u2019s worth combining them? Stick with me for the next minutes!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start making AR apps for free!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The internet is loaded with resources, so every time you have an idea and think that you can put it into practice, you will definitely find all the information you need. Starting from this idea, after draining half of my phone\u2019s battery with a couple of new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.snapchat.com\/en-US\/a\/filters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snapchat filters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I was actually very curious <\/span><b>how they were made<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Props to the social network, by the way. If it weren\u2019t for them, I wouldn&#8217;t be writing about Unity and augmented reality now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So there I was, looking all over blogs, forums and all kinds of websites, in my attempt to find as much as possible about how the heck they made those filters. I knew that they were <\/span><b>great examples of augmented reality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but hey, I\u2019m a geek, so I wanted to know even more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently, there are <\/span><b>a lot of tools you can use to make an AR app<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it\u2019s Unity that manages to stand out of the crowd. The cool part about it is that you can <\/span><b>integrate various AR platforms in it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which provide amazing opportunities for development! Oh, and all these are available for free!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vuforia, the platform of choice for many devs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above, <\/span><b>you can integrate AR solutions in Unity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, starting with version 2017.2,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unity3d.com\/partners\/vuforia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vuforia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10897\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/vuforia-logo-1024x299.png\" alt=\"Vuforia logo\" width=\"1024\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/vuforia-logo-1024x299.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/vuforia-logo-150x44.png 150w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/vuforia-logo-300x88.png 300w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/vuforia-logo-768x224.png 768w, https:\/\/www.unlockunit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/vuforia-logo.png 1788w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically speaking, it is a software platform for creating augmented reality apps, allowing developers to add advanced computer vision functionality to any app, so it can recognize images and objects, but also interact with spaces in the real world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this sounds way too complicated, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you prefer a simpler approach, let\u2019s just say that it makes it very easy to create stunning Unity and augmented reality experiences, no matter if you\u2019re focusing on handheld or headword devices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a Unity augmented reality SDK, which can be used for making some pretty cool things. And I bet that now you want to know how. Ok, just follow me closely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to develop AR apps with Unity and Vuforia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, there\u2019s one thing that\u2019s worth mentioning: I\u2019m no expert in Unity AR, but I\u2019ll try to introduce you in it and include all the resources you need. Don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s easy to set up a basic Vuforia project in Unity. Let\u2019s begin, shall we?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 1: Download Unity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find the installation kit on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unity3d.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.unity3d.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also, make sure you add the modules for Android. If you want to build for iOS, there\u2019s also a module for this. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 2: Create a developer account on Vuforia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vuforia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.vuforia.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and create your developer account. You also need to add an image target, which your camera is going to track. For start, you can use this maze, available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.instructables.com\/F16\/WBMD\/IQ6VC5V2\/F16WBMDIQ6VC5V2.MEDIUM.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Download a copy of the database for Unity 3D, alongside the Vuforia plugin for Unity.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After going through these three steps, you\u2019re ready to start the actual development process, so continue with the next steps. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 4: Set up the scene in Unity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the most important steps in our Unity augmented reality tutorial since it\u2019s basically the&#8230;let\u2019s call it root of your upcoming AR app. Please follow these instructions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After opening Unity, you need to import the Vuforia plugin and the image database. In order to do this, go to the Vuforia folder, then click and drag the ARCamera prefab into the hierarchy. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in the same folder, look for the imageTarget prefab and also drag it into the hierarchy. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, while in the scene, move the imageTarget prefab just a few units away from the camera. It\u2019s up to you to approximate the distance. The idea is to drag it onto the ARCamera prefab, turning it into a child. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using some cubes, start creating a 3D copy of the maze on the image you\u2019ve uploaded earlier, on the image target. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a new material, by making a sphere. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drag the new material onto the sphere, but opt for a brighter color. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a cube, the place it above the maze created earlier. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove the collider of the sphere, as well as the mesh renderer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 5: Add some code<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, now it\u2019s time for some coding.
