How to spot a fake Apple Watch – Know the differences

Don’t waste your money on a cheap wearable knock-off!

Believe it or not, nowadays, smartwatches are being replicated almost as much as regular wrist watches and we’re talking especially about the Apple Watch. Don’t be surprised if in a few months you’ll be watching Pawn Stars and see a guy coming in to trade one, followed by Rick or Corey not accepting it, due to the fact that it’s a fake.

We’ve seen a lot of replicas until now and some of them were actually pretty good, being hard to tell the differences. Still, nobody wants to waste $350 or even more on a smartwatch that’s not the real deal, that’s why you should buy one only from an official Apple Store or an authorized reseller.

On the other sides, we’re sure that there are a lot of bargain hunters out there, always looking for a better price, which might end up buying the smartwatch from other places. In order to avoid unpleasant situations, we’ve put together a few tips on how to spot a fake Apple Watch, so you don’t end up with a cheap Chinese knock-off around your wrist.

1. Check out the box

It’s as easy as this. You don’t even need to look at the actual device if the box doesn’t have that classic Apple look. And by classic, we mean plain white, black, blue, pink and so on, with round edges and a soft feel. Not to mention that the Apple logo should be on top, while information about the device is printed on the sides.

2. Check the position of the Digital Crown

Ok, so let’s say that the box looks fine. In this case, it’s time to see how the watch looks. A distinctive design element is the Digital Crown, used to navigate through the menu. It should be placed on the top right side of the watch. On a fake Apple Watch, it can have different placements, basically screaming “don’t buy this c*ap” from all pores.

3. Check the back of the watch

The original Apple Watch’s back cover is loaded with sensors, in order to provide accurate information about your workouts. As for a fake, we don’t know how it’s going to be able to do this, while most of them look like above.

4. Check the interface

It’s enough to take a look at a few press images with the original device and you’ll see that the user interface is one of the trademark elements. Power up the watch you’re about to buy and see if it looks like in the image on the left. If it has a ridiculously low pixel density and it’s more like the one on the right, we have some bad news for you…

5. Check the touchscreen

Ok, time to see how responsive that little display is. Basically, on the real deal, you shouldn’t have any problems with navigating through screens and accessing menus. Still, a fake Apple Watch can be a nightmare from this point of view.

Lew from Unbox Therapy even made a video where you can see how un-responsive the display of a $50 watch can be, not to mention that some of them don’t even have a touchscreen!

You might want to check the best Apple Watch apps of the moment too!

As you can see, you don’t need to be tech savvy in order to know how to spot a fake Apple Watch. These are just a few crucial details which every potential user, no matter how much he or she knows about wearables, can use when buying a smartwatch from other places than Apple Stores or authorized resellers.
